Areolar Reduction

Refine Your Shape. Reclaim Your Confidence.

The size and shape of the areolas (pigmented area surrounding the nipples) can significantly influence the overall aesthetics of the breasts. For some, enlarged or asymmetrical areolas may lead to feelings of self-consciousness or dissatisfaction with their appearance. Whether due to genetics, hormonal changes, aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations, these concerns have options.

Areola reduction surgery offers a personalized solution to achieve a more balanced and proportionate breast appearance.

What Is Areola Reduction Surgery?

Areola reduction is a surgical procedure designed to decrease the diameter of one or both areolas, creating a more harmonious balance with the overall breast size and shape. The surgery involves:

  • Making a circular incision around the existing areola.
  • Removing a doughnut-shaped piece of tissue to achieve the desired size.
  • Closing the incision with sutures placed along the natural border of the areola to minimize visible scarring.

This procedure is often performed under local anesthesia and typically takes about an hour. It can be done as a standalone surgery or in conjunction with other breast procedures, such as breast augmentation, lift, or reduction, to achieve comprehensive aesthetic goals.

Is Areola Reduction Right for You?

You may consider areola reduction surgery if you:

  • Feel that your areolas are disproportionately large or asymmetrical.
  • Experience changes in areola size due to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations.
  • Desire a more balanced and proportionate breast appearance.

Dr. Alex Seal understands that the decision to undergo any cosmetic procedure is personal and can provide a thorough assessment to determine the option to achieve all of your goals.

Recovery and Results

Recovery from areola reduction surgery is relatively easy. Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort, which settles within a few days. You can typically return to work and normal activities within a week, however, strenuous exercise should be avoided for a 3-4 weeks. Scarring is minimal and strategically placed along the natural border of the areola, often fading significantly over time.
