Conveniently located to serve Vancouver, BC

Your eyes are beautiful from both a functional and aesthetic point of view. They are an important part to your facial beauty and harmony. Excess skin creating drooping and overhanging eyelids, and excess puffiness can lead to a tired and aged appearance and feeling. This can also interfere with your vision. Eyelid Surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, improves the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids, restoring a rested and rejuvenated look.

Vancouver plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Seal focuses on providing our patients with natural-looking blepharoplasty results. He can use his surgical skill and artistry to provide you with your ideal results.

I can not give higher praise to Dr. Alex Seal. He has a warm, professional bedside manner and his attention, patience, and communication skills were excellent. I wish all doctors were this good. He was on time and thorough, yet I never felt rushed. He answered all of my (many) questions clearly and in a way that I felt cared for and supported. Many doctors seem to answer, but never check that they are understood, but this is not the case with Dr. Seal. His support staff were helpful, and professional. I am extremely satisfied with the results of his services. Overall, this was the best experience I’ve had dealing with the medical profession. Thank you Dr. Seal.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can restore the smooth appearance of the eyelids and enhance the overall appearance of the eyes. Commonly, excess skin is removed, muscle can be tightened, and fat is either removed or repositioned in the eyelid to create a beautiful shape and appearance to the eye.

Dr. Seal would be happy to discuss the details with you and help you decide if eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty would be a good option to help you achieve your individual goals and create a beautiful, rested look to the eyes, leaving you looking and feeling great.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Considerations

Eyelid Surgery, or Blepharoplasty, focuses on the drooping and overhanging skin of the eyelids and excess puffiness that can lead to a tired and aged appearance and feeling. The excess skin and bags can obscure the natural contours of the eyelid and make it difficult to apply make-up.

Both women and men often comment that they feel their eyes look tired, heavy, small, or even sad. A blepharoplasty can be a great solution to this. Areas that are commonly treated include:

  • Removal or repositioning of excess fatty deposits in the upper eyelids that appear as puffiness.
  • Removal of excess, sagging skin from the upper eyelid that creates folds or hooding, disrupting the natural contour of the eyelid. This can greatly enhance the aesthetics of the eye, however, also can help with obstructed vision.
  • Tightening of the lower eyelid skin and fat repositioning to remove lower eyelid bags.

How Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Is Performed

In general, incisions are made in the natural fold of your upper eyelid, and just below the lash line of the lower eyelid to help hide them as best as possible. This allows for access to the underlying fat and muscles. The excess fat is removed or repositioned, and the muscle can be tightened if needed. Following this, the excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed with fine sutures.

One of Dr. Seal’s goals for your Eyelid Surgery is to make your incisions as unnoticeable as possible. The surgery cannot be done without making some incisions, however, these are strategically placed to help hide them as best as possible. They usually become invisible to the naked eye.

The lower eyelids can sometimes be treated through an incision on the inside of the lower lid, allowing them to heal with no visible scarring. All of the important scar management modalities that you can do to help optimize your incision and results are reviewed during your follow-up visits.

What to Expect During Your Recovery

Eyelid Surgery, or blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure at a private surgical facility. You will be able to go home after the procedure to relax and recover. In general, most patients do well over the first few days, and we provide you with all the medication, comfort eye wraps, and supplies to help you through this process.

When thinking about time off work, or away from social commitments, 2 weeks is usually a safe window of downtime, as it is common to experience some swelling and bruising after the surgery. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks to prevent ongoing swelling from the increase in your blood pressure.

Dr. Seal will see you in the office over the recovery period to review all of the important information with you and ensure you are doing well. The final results can appear gradually over the first month. The incisions continue to fade over the first year, and all of the things you can do to help optimize your results are reviewed during your follow-up visits.

Eyelid Surgery can create beautiful, dramatic results that leave you both looking and feeling great. This is always optimized with a healthy lifestyle.  Patients love their refreshed look, to help contribute to looking and feeling healthy, youthful and beautiful.
