Nipple Reduction

Conveniently located to serve Vancouver, BC

Nipple reduction in Vancouver, BC, is a way to correct nipples and areolae that do not fit the proportions of the breasts. Our bodies all change over time. For some women, their nipples and areolae can become large from the natural aging process, or from the influences of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and/or weight changes. Every woman has an ideal image of how they would like their nipples and areola to look, and when this is not achieved, it can greatly affect their breast self-image and overall self-confidence. Nipple reduction procedures are performed to reduce the diameter of the areola or the projection of the nipple. Dr. Seal would be happy to discuss the details of these procedures with you and help you decide if they may be right for you to achieve your individual aesthetic breast goals.

What Is Nipple Reduction?

Nipple reduction surgery is a procedure performed to change the size, shape, or projection of the nipple-areolar complex (NAC). The nipple is the protrusion in the center of the breast, while the pigmented area surrounding the nipple is called the areola.

Nipple reduction is usually done in combination with breast augmentation or lift surgery to enhance the appearance of the breasts, but it can also be done as a standalone procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Women in good overall health who are not planning any future pregnancies and are not currently breastfeeding are ideal candidates for nipple reduction surgery.

If you have asymmetrical areolae, you may be recommended to undergo this procedure to achieve similarity in size and shape. Patients with enlarged or inverted nipples may be recommended to explore this corrective surgery.

If you have nipple piercings, you may need to have them redone following this procedure, since they might be closed after you heal. It is important that you have realistic expectations and a generally positive outlook.

Preparing for Nipple Reduction Surgery

In preparation for your nipple reduction surgery, there are preoperative steps and reminders that you need to follow closely. Stop smoking weeks before the surgery. Do not drink alcohol several days prior to your procedure.

You may be asked to stop or adjust certain medications prior to your surgery, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and certain herbal supplements. You may be recommended to fast six hours before the surgery.

The Procedure

Nipple reduction surgery will be performed under anesthesia to eliminate any possibility of pain or discomfort. Small incisions will be made, and tissues may be removed or repositioned to address the diameter or height of the nipple or the dimensions of the areola. Various techniques will be employed to achieve the desired results.

Finally, the incisions will be stitched closed with sutures. The whole surgical process can take an hour or two to complete.

The Recovery Process

The recovery after nipple reduction surgery involves limited activities for the first month. You may not need to take significant time off work. Some patients are able to go back to work and normal activities after a few days.

Bruising, swelling, and pain are commonly experienced but easily manageable. Avoid high-intensity workouts and sexual activity for a few weeks for proper healing. It may take a few weeks before you can see the final results of your nipple reduction surgery.
